Kids: Snow Days!
When the first snowflake falls kids immediately cross their fingers in hopes of hearing the sweet words “snow day”.
Before your little snow angels head outdoors make sure they are properly dressed. Layers are the key to successfully keeping your children warm. If they get hot or soaking wet all they have to do is peel off a layer of clothing. The first layer of clothing should be wool or thermal. Cotton does not keep you very warm and soaks up any moister. The top layer of clothing should be water resistant, like a water resistant jacket, to keep your child’s clothing dry. Before sending your children out to play make sure they have warm wool socks, water-resistant boots, water-resistant gloves and a hat. Periodically check your children’s socks and gloves to make sure they are dry.
You may think when the warm days are over so are the days of sunscreen. According to The American Academy of Dermatology the snow reflects 80% of the sun’s UV rays. Apply sunscreen on your children’s face and other parts that are exposed to the sun. The sun is very bright reflecting off the snow. Give your children a pair of sunglasses to protect their eyes.
In the winter months it’s harder for us to remember to stay hydrated. Make sure your children stay hydrate throughout the day. Before your children head out to play give them a warm snack and a warm drink.
Snow days can be some of the best days of the year as long as you stay warm and hydrated.
