Do you know your steaks?

Do you know your steaks? If you go out to a restaurant or browse the meat counter at Super 1 Foods, it pays to know what the various cuts of steak are. With just a little bit of practice, you can learn which ones are the best bets for healthy eating AND staying on a budget!

Tuna steak: it’s the leanest, but of course, it’s not a BEEF steak. Tuna is full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Filet Mignon: very lean and tender, a small serving has about 15 grams of saturated fat. If you’re at a restaurant, order the petite fillet. It’s smaller, and therefore, more healthy. Filet is a bit pricey, though.

Sirloin steak is even leaner and most times, even cheaper. The down side is that it’s also a tougher cut of meat. Most steak lovers advise serving it medium instead of rare, and slicing it into thin bites. But at just 6 grams of sat fat, it’s worth it!

Strip steak is a big favorite, but it has quite a bit of fat—that’s the marbling that makes it so delicious! Strip steak has about 28 grams of saturated fat.

Rib-eye steak is a big favorite. It’s so tender and juicy—and has 56 grams of saturated fat.

So how does it help you to know this? Steak is a wonderfully delicious treat, and knowing the nutrition of it helps you fit it into your eating plan. Lower-fat steaks can be eaten more often, and the others can be special splurges.
