Ham Sandwich, Hold the Bread

Ham Sandwich, Hold the BreadWhen you're trying to cut calories, sandwiches can be a dangerous food item. So many of the toppings are full of calories, fat grams and carbohydrates.

Every once in a while, though, creativity helps you come up with  a way to enjoy the best parts of a sandwich without having to endure the less-healthy aspects.

Take the old favorite: ham and cheese. With a little ingenuity, you can still enjoy all the taste and feel far less guilt.

Deli Delight Roll-Ups

2 cups of coleslaw blend (shredded cabbage, available in the produce section)

1/4 cup reduced-calorie cole slaw dressing

24 slices shaved deli ham (smoked, brown sugar glazed, etc)

8 large lettuce leaves

1 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese

Toss the shredded cabbage with the cole slaw dressing

On each of 4 plates, place 2 lettuce leaves. Top with 3 slices of shaved ham and then sprinkle with cheese. Top with coleslaw mixture and roll up like a burrito.

Secure with toothpicks, if desired, or wrap in plastic wrap until serving time.

Serves 4

Note: Use your favorite deli meat instead of ham. Turkey and roast beef are great choices!
