Do you know what hot cross buns are? You hear about them, but have you ever seen them? You may be surprised to learn that there's really nothing spectacular about them; hot cross buns are buns. Served hot. And decorated with white icing in the shape of a cross. Hot cross buns. Just like the name implies!
If you're not a master baker, there's still hope. You can make hot cross buns the easy way—courtesy of your freezer. Get a loaf of frozen bread dough and follow the recipe below. Or for an even easier method, thaw out some frozen dinner rolls—which are already in the bun shape—bake, and add icing. Presto! A traditional Easter treat!
Easy Hot Cross Buns
Ingredients:
1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
1 cup raisins
Non-stick cooking spray
Ingredients:
Icing:
1 cup powdered sugar
1 Tbs softened butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 to 3 Tbs milk
Directions:
Roll dough into a large rectangle. Sprinkle with raisins.
Starting at long side, roll dough tightly into a log. Slice log into 9 equal parts.
Shape each part into a ball; transfer into square pans, coated with non-stick cooking spray.
Cover with sprayed plastic wrap, place in a warm place and allow to double in bulk (about an hour). Remove plastic wrap.
Bake buns into a preheated 350°F oven for 20 minutes, until golden brown.
Remove immediately from pans; cool on racks.
Prepare icing by stirring together the powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and milk until slightly runny; squeeze icing onto cooled buns, drawing a cross on top of each.
