Whether you’re in a bind or just trying to save a little money, here are some quick, from-the-cupboard solutions to some of our everyday household problems.
- Get food odors out of your cutting board by generously sprinkling salt on it and scrubbing with the cut-side of a lemon.
- Substitute plain yogurt for sour cream when baking.
- Frozen grapes make great ice cubes when you don’t want watered-down punch.
- Pumpkin pie spice is a blend of ground cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. It works great when you don’t have all three.
- Use uncooked rice or dry beans instead of pie weights to keep a pastry crust flat when baking.
- Fill a zipper-top bag with melted chocolate and snip the corner to decorate desserts.
- Use hot sauce or lemon juice to add flavor to a recipe instead of more salt.
- Grease baking pans with the wrapper from a stick of butter.
