Is It a Medical Emergency?
When is an injury serious enough to seek emergency help? We all have different criteria, but most of us can agree on a few.
Call 911 or go to the ER right away if:
- Your child's bleeding doesn't stop after approximately five minutes of direct pressure
- Your child was bitten by an animal or a person
- The cut is more than 1/8" deep or is gaping open
- The wound has debris or dirt embedded in it that you can't clean out
- The injury was caused by a dirty object, such as broken glass on the ground
- The cut is a deep puncture wound (this type of injury is more prone to infection because it doesn't bleed, which helps rid the wound of bacteria)
- Your child doesn't have sensation in the wounded area, which could mean nerve damage
- The wound is on your child's face, neck, head (prompt treatment will minimize the chance of permanent scarring), or the palm side of the hands (potentially injuring a tendon)
- The area appears infected (red, swollen, oozing or painful).
