Summertime picnics and barbecues aren't famous for being diet-friendly events. But nobody wants to skip a picnic, just because they're trying to eat healthy.
Often, it only takes a few changes to really improve the lineup of food choices. Consider these:
Barbecued Chicken: Have a breast instead of a drumstick, and marinate the chicken in a garlic-lemon vinaigrette instead of thick barbecue sauce.
Burgers: Skip the cheese and add a bit more flavor by adding finely diced tomatoes and carrots to the lean ground beef (or turkey) when making patties.
Hot dog: Instead of heaping on the chili, top your dog with coleslaw (made with low fat mayo).
Macaroni salad: Use whole-wheat pasta and mix with low fat mayo and balsamic vinegar. Toss in fresh veggies like tomatoes, broccoli and diced peppers.
Potato salad: Skip the mayonnaise dressing and use a low-fat vinaigrette. Try baled potato chunks, balsamic vinegar, a dash of olive oil and rosemary.
Beverages: This one's easy! Make sure all of your drinks are sugar-free. That's easy to do with artificial sweeteners, and even better if they're completely unsweetened.
