Making Do
Just about every child (and parent) loves a good craft project. But keeping your family stocked in supplies and projects can get expensive! As a way to demonstrate the value of re-using and recycling products, show your child all about making do.
Making do is when you use whatever you find around the house (and the yard) for projects, rather than going to the store to buy special items. Some families even take making do so far that they have a special box to keep potential craft items. That way, when the crafting bug hits, there's a ready supply of items.
What might you save for crafting? Empty (clean) food containers, toilet paper and paper towel cardboard tubes, junk mail with no printing on the back, business reply envelopes, promotional stickers, bottle caps, empty egg cartons, twist-ties from loaves of bread…..and on and on.
Outside, you'll find plenty of ideas. Stones, sticks, leaves, pine cones….the only concern is that these items don't contain bugs or dirt. You might want to keep them outside after collecting them.
A Fun Project: Rock Bugs:
Create your own fun insects out of natural materials! Look for smooth pebbles and fasten a head to a body with tacky glue. Use small twigs, grass and pine needles to make legs and antennae. Leaves and flower petals make great wings! Craft glue or hot glue will make the job fun and easy. Paint your project if you want. …..and say, this could make a great Christmas gift for relatives!
