Making Homemade, Organic Peanut Butter

Making Homemade, Organic Peanut ButterHave you ever wondered if you could really and truly make all of your foods from scratch? Some are easier than others, but peanut butter really isn't that hard. Anyone with a blender or food processor can easily make it at home. The problem is that it can be expensive—and if you're going for organic, it can be really expensive!

You'll need 2 cups of roasted, shelled peanuts. That's the expensive part, because if you're buying roasted, organic peanuts, they are pricey! You'll also need a tablespoon of peanut oil and a half-teaspoon of salt (if the nuts aren't pre-salted). If you are using a food processor, all ingredients go in at once. Blender peanut butter starts with the oil first, and nuts and salt are gradually added so you don't overpower the machine. Process until the consistency is what you prefer (smooth to extra-crunchy). For a food processor, that'll be 2 to 3 minutes. 2 ½ cups of peanuts will make 1 cup of peanut butter—it's concentrated! And that explains why the cost is so high.

While making your own peanut butter is fun and satisfying, it's not economical. For everyday use, you may want to buy your favorite brand at the store!
