You can eat healthy and still grill. The obvious choice is to look for organic cuts of meat, or use extra-firm tofu or other soy products. There are other ways to eat a bit healthier when you're grilling out. Here are a few simple substitutions that get you a bit closer to the natural way of eating:
Enjoy:
nitrate-free turkey dog
98% fat-free ground turkey breast
turkey or vegetarian sausages
skinless chicken breast
pork loin
Locally-raised bison steaks and burgers
Marinated and grilled fresh vegetables
Soy hot dogs
Some avid grillers have cut back on grill time because of cancer concerns. Research has shown that the carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) form as a result of grease flare-ups. Organic grillers are fortunate in that regard.
Most of our grilling choices are naturally low in fat. With no fat to flare up, the cancer concern is greatly lessened. If you do have a piece of meat for grilling and it has significant marbling or fat, trim any outer edges so that the fat is minimized. Keep a spray bottle of water handy, and if any fat does drip, give your grill grate a squirt.
