Slash the Sodium

Many doctors advise their diabetic patients to lower their daily salt intake. Too much salt can put you at risk for hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart cardiovascular (heart) complications. The recommended daily limit of salt is about 1 teaspoon (2300 milligrams), yet most Americans consume twice that amount.

Tips to reduce salt/sodium intake in your diet:

  • Don't add salt to your foods when cooking or serving.
  • Avoid or use less of salty foods like bacon, cheese and prepared snack foods
  • Buy low-sodium and "no salt added" foods
  • Eat more fresh vegetables, fruits and meats—without added sauces or seasonings.
