Snacking at the Service StationWe've all been there: you stop to fill up the gas tank, and suddenly your stomach feels like it's running on empty, too. So you walk inside the gas station to see what's available. And you know what? If you're careful, you really can find some healthy snacks and treats! If you're preparing for a long drive, that's an important consideration.

Walk over to the cooler. If you see low-fat yogurt, grab a carton or too. It's full of calcium and protein, and that makes you feel fuller. String cheese and skim milk are other good choices. If there's fresh fruit, you can put together a real winning combination.

Trail mix may seem like a healthy choice, but often the pre-packaged mixes are full of sugar and fat. Instead, make your own snack mix from low-sugar dry cereal (shredded wheat, oat rings, etc). Add in some raisins, other dried fruit, nuts or pretzels. You've just created a high-fiber snack that may make you famous!

So those are a few smart picks. Nobody has to tell you which foods to avoid, do they? Donuts, cinnamon rolls, candy bars, chips….you may get a quick energy boost, but later your blood sugar will come crashing down and you'll be tired, cranky and hungry all over again!
