Start With… Phyllo Dough

Start With… Phyllo DoughPhyllo dough is a cook's secret treasure, because it's so impressive looking, but it's a snap to use.

You'll find this ultra-thin and delicate pastry dough in the freezer case, and most recipes only use a partial box.

Leftover phyllo dough provides fabulous opportunities for impressive-looking but very easy treats, including:

  • Strawberry Cream Treats: Stack 4 sheets of phyllo, lightly misting each sheet with butter-flavor baking spray. Cut the stack into 12 pieces and place 6 pieces crosswise into muffin cups.  Place the remaining 6 pieces lengthwise on top of the first pieces. Bake at 350° F for 15 minutes. Cool and fill with whipped topping and sliced strawberries.
  • Garlic Cheese Appetizers: Stack 8 sheets of phyllo, misting with baking spray between each sheet. Sprinkle with garlic powder. Cut the stacks into 2-inch squares and bake on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet at 400° F for 5 minutes. Top with slice of your favorite cheese, which will melt as the sheets cool.
  • Crispy Parmesan Sticks: Stack 4 sheets of phyllo dough, spraying each layer with a mist of baking spray and a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese. Cut into long, ¾-inch wide strips and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake at 400° F for 5 minutes.
  • Cinnamon Crispies: Cut phyllo into ½-inch strips and place in a bowl. Lightly toss with your fingers to separate each strip. Spray with butter-flavored baking spray and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Toss gently and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake at 325 ° F for 15 minutes.
  • Smoked Salmon Mini Tarts: Stack 6 sheets of phyllo, misting each layer with baking spray. Cut stacks into 24 squares. Press gently into mini-muffin tins and bake for 12 minutes at 350 ° F. Cool and fill with a mixture of whipped cream cheese, smoked salmon and chopped fresh dill.
  • Poppy seed Sticks: Stack 4 sheets of phyllo and spray each sheet with nonstick baking spray and shredded Parmesan cheese. Cut into ¾-inch strips and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake at 400 ° F for 5 minutes.
