What's the Ornish Diet?

If you're concerned about a heart-healthy diet, you've probably heard of the Ornish diet. And if you're like most of us, you're not exactly sure what it's all about.

The Ornish diet is the original low-fat diet, recommending less than 10% of calories from fat. The diet also suggests eating more small meals, instead of 3 large ones, and puts a strong emphasis on vegetarian foods (because they're often so low in fat to begin with). Ornish doesn't restrict calories, but asks you to choose the foods carefully. Foods are divided into categories showing which can be eaten all the time, some of the time and none of the time. Moderate exercise helps boost your resting metabolism.

The diet was named after Dr. Dean Ornish, a cardiologist, who created the plan. Most experts feel it's a healthy and sound plan, but users who aren't already vegetarians will find there is a lot to get used to.
