Whole Grain

September is Whole Grain Month! A whole grain is a grain with the original kernel. This includes the bran, germ and endosperm. Recent studies show that eating whole grains can lower the risk of many chronic diseases. For example, whole grains can lower the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Whole grains are a good source of nutrients like zinc, magnesium, B vitamins and fiber.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends making half the grains you eat whole grains. That is at least 3 to 5 servings for adults and 2 to 3 whole-grain servings for children a day. A serving size of grains is about an ounce. A serving of grains can be 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of ready-to-eat cereal or 1/2 cup cooked rice.
