Build a Better Grilled CheeseIt’s time to come to terms with it – to remove the guilt from a great American classic: the grilled cheese sandwich. Whether you’re young or just young at heart, there’s nothing more wonderful than a grilled cheese. Customize your own “grilled treasure” that is more fabulous than guilty.

First, shop right. Super 1 Foods offers the NuVal scoring system at all of its stores to help you make “better for you” ingredient choices. The scores, located on the shelf next to the price tag, show a 1-to-100 value – the higher the score, the more nutritious.

  • Choose the right cheese. Cheese is a keen source of lean protein, calcium, phosphorus and other health benefits. The trick is to select the right variety and control portions. To limit fat intake, consider a soft cheese made from skim or part-skim milk. Look for the variety that best suits your taste buds. Consider choices with the highest possible NuVal Score (example: American scores 25 to 31, Swiss or Cheddar score 24 to 26, Provolone scores 25 to 50 and Feta scores 28 to 31).
  • Consider whole-grain bread. Add nutrient-rich, complex-carbohydrate goodness with whole-grain or 100% whole-wheat bread. Consider those with a NuVal Score 40 to 57 or higher.
  • Shop for “fab” flavor toppers. Go from good to “fab” with an array of fresh toppers like onions, tomatoes, red peppers, mushrooms, basil or cilantro, and even apple and pear slices (all have a NuVal Score of 100).

Second, kick guilt to the curb. Grill healthy. Skip the butter on the bread. Lightly spray the pan with your favorite cooking oil OR skip the oil and use a sandwich press or grill. Top off with Dijon mustard. Enjoy cheesy “fabulousness.”
