World Baking DayGrab a cup of coffee and heat up the oven. World Baking Day (May 18th) celebrates the innovative minds and busy flour-powdered hands of bakers everywhere. Last year, global bakers at World Baking Day challenged consumers to bake bravely by stepping out of their comfort zone to try a new recipe.

Many ways exist to make baking more nutritious. One is to use the NuVal® Score – found on Super 1 Foods’ shelves next to the price tag – to find ingredients that add value to favorite recipes.

To reduce fat in baking recipes, use fruit and vegetable purees in place of oil and butter. Applesauce is best used for spongy, dry, cake-like textures. For rich, velvety textures, try Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt will yield a richer, creamier baked good with a boost of protein. Mashed bananas work best with cakes and brownies with a fruity and chocolate flavor. Use pureed pumpkin for muffins, breads, biscuits and citrus-spiced cakes. Since pumpkin can clash with different flavors, be sure to only used pureed pumpkin with complementary flavors. Replace butter with mashed avocado using a 1:1 ratio. If using avocado, you may want to add more liquid to achieve desired results.

Check with well-tested recipes before swapping out ingredients because substitutions can dramatically change texture, taste and baking outcomes. One simple baker’s choice is to stuff fresh apples (NuVal 100) with nuts, seeds, oatmeal, dried fruit and cinnamon to create a dessert (or breakfast) that is a tasty treat.
