National Hot Dog MonthJuly is National Hot Dog Month according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, and it is being celebrated for good reason. Americans love their hot dogs. In 2012, they spent more than $1.7 billion on hot dogs. During Hot Dog Season, which is from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs eaten every second during that period.
NuVal® Scores, which rank food from 1 to 100 in nutritional value, help Super 1 Foods shoppers choose from a wide variety of hot dogs and sausages, as well as buns, condiments and side dishes. Products in the better-for-you category, low-fat and fat-free, continue to sell well. In 2004, these products accounted for 12.4 percent of the total hot dog market.

If you want to keep your shape but don’t want to give up summertime hot dogs:

  • Reduce fat. Try low-sodium and low-fat hot dog selections.
  • Scrap the bun. Select lower-fat or whole-wheat hot dog buns or go solo without the bun.
  • No or low-calorie toppers. Top the hot dog with diced and fresh onions, romaine lettuce and tomatoes (NuVal 100).
