Ticks and Lyme DiseaseTake steps to protect yourself and your pet from Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that can cause joint, heart and nervous system problems. Lyme disease comes from the bite of certain types of ticks.

Wear long pants and insect repellent when you’re spending time in grassy areas. This will deter deer ticks, which can transmit Lyme disease.

Check your family and pets daily. Don’t forget the backs of knees, armpits and scalps. You have about 36 hours to remove an infected tick before it transmits the disease.

If you find a tick, remove it with tweezers. Never burn it or smother it; instead, grab its body as close to your skin as possible and pull back firmly. Apply antibiotic ointment to the area. Remember to save the tick in a plastic bag in case your doctor wants to examine it.
