Better-For-You Tailgate! As sports and food enthusiasts, Americans have perfected the art of hosting the “tailgate.”

Appropriately coined around the open tailgate of a vehicle, tailgate parties are the pre- and post-game meals indelibly linked to autumn’s sporting events held in the parking lots of colleges, high schools and professional stadiums all across the U.S. With the tailgate’s popularity has come culinary pride in putting together the best and most creative barbecue and tailgate grub. While the menu initially featured only portable picnic staples like hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, cheese plates and cold salads, tailgate “chefs” are now only limited by the cooking gear being used.

Super 1 Foods challenges you to bag tailgate foods that not only fill hungry fans but also add nutrition to the fun. The NuVal® Nutritional Scoring System, found near the price tags in all Super 1 Foods stores, can guide busy tailgate planners to some of the better-for-you cuts of meat, poultry and seafood – perfect for the stadium and parking lot grills. Here are some ways to bag a better fall tailgate:

  • Red and black beans: add nutrients and a Southwest flair to guacamole, cheese dips and salsa. Great for dipping tortilla chips and bite-sized vegetables
  • Sweet potatoes: sliced and roasted on the grill, dunk well in low-fat sour cream or yogurt dip.
  • Shrimp or chicken on the “barbie:” skewer shrimp or chicken chunks with onions, peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms, nothing tastes better
  • Salmon steaks: ditch sugary sauces, just season with lemon
  • Mini grab-and-gos: stack bite-sized, whole-grain bread sandwiches with low-fat Swiss cheese, lean meats, tomatoes, onions and lettuce

Remember to keep it fresh and store unused food carefully in coolers.
