Brookshire Grocery Co. Collects Over 91K Pounds of Food for East Texas Food Bank

TYLER, Texas, Aug. 20, 2020 – Brookshire Grocery Co. has coordinated the collection of food from customers and vendors totaling over $56,000 and donated it to the East Texas Food Bank to help provide for community members in need. The donations were made possible through the “Fill the Big Grocery Cart” event Aug. 14 – 16 at the Brookshire’s store on Rice Road in Tyler and the generous partnership with local produce vendors. This is one of many ways that BGC has given back to the East Texas Food Bank and those who are most in need.

“We care about our communities and are committed to doing what we can to lessen the impact of COVID-19 and slow the spread,” said Trent Brookshire, Chief Operating Officer for Brookshire Grocery Co. “Hunger relief is a cause we work to support in our communities all year long, but it is especially important to help individuals in need during the pandemic. We truly appreciate our customers and vendors for their generous support to make this possible.”

More than 1,500 pounds of non-perishable food were collected at the store over the weekend and is being added to the more than 91,000 pounds of produce donated by BGC’s vendor partners. That represents more than two 18-wheeler truckloads and more than $56,000 in retail. This donation will help provide more than 77,000 meals. The food will provide for the one in four East Texans, including one in three children, who are facing hunger because of the pandemic.

“The East Texas Food Bank is so appreciative to Brookshire Grocery Company and their patrons for this very generous food donation,” said Dennis Cullinane, CEO for the East Texas Food Bank.  “Brookshire’s and their partners have been true heroes in our fight against the rising food insecurity rates caused by the pandemic in our community and we are grateful.”

This donation follows the $1.2 million donation BGC made in May to food banks across the more than 150 communities it serves to make a difference in the communities it serves. The $1.2 million donation will provide more than 9.6 million meals for families in East Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Of the total donation, $1 million is from BGC’s giving back program and the additional $200,000 is as a result of the customer match program.

BGC hosted the “Fill the Big Grocery Cart” event to help those effected by the pandemic crisis. During the event, customers were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items for the East Texas Food Bank with the goal to completely fill the company’s 13-foot tall motorized grocery cart.

BGC is hosting “Fill the Big Grocery Cart” events Aug. 21-23 at Brookshire’s located at 2020 Roseland Blvd. and Aug. 28-30 at FRESH by Brookshire’s located at 6991 Old Jacksonville Hwy.

Brookshire Grocery Company Continues to Implement Procedures to Safeguard Employees, Customers

TYLER, Texas, April 5, 2020 – Brookshire Grocery Company’s top priority is the health and safety of our employee-partners and customers. The company has been monitoring the COVID-19 situation since early January and has continued to implement best practices and procedures to adapt its business model to serve during this unprecedented time.

“In order to continue serving our customers and communities, we share in the responsibility of all essential businesses to serve our customers while preventing unnecessary exposures,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Co. “We have protocols and procedures in place to protect our employees and customers while in our stores. We were prepared for this pandemic and are continuing to evaluate our protocols every day as further expert guidance becomes available.”

As BGC continues to monitor this pandemic, the company is following guidance from the CDC and health authorities. The company is communicating with leaders, employees and suppliers to keep them updated on current information and health advisements. BGC continues to roll out initiatives, protocols and procedures daily to help prevent and combat the spread of the virus. These are focused in three main areas – best practices in stores, social distancing and employee-partner resources.

Best Practice Efforts in Stores

BGC continues to take proactive and preventive measures, including sanitation practices beyond our normally stringent standards. Employees conduct deep cleaning and sanitizing of stores and hard surfaces as well as fuel stations throughout the day. We have contracted a professional third-party cleaning company to be deployed if a potential exposure has occurred. We have increased the frequency in which we sanitize surfaces such as shopping carts and baskets, keypads, counter tops, etc. As a standard practice, we have sanitizing wipes available near our shopping carts.

The company has provided education and signage in stores for customers and employees, with information for preventative protocols of the CDC for the COVID-19 virus. The company has also suspended the practice of allowing customers to bring reusable bags into its stores. As much as BGC appreciates and shares in our customers commitment to sustainability, the company knows this is the right thing to do in order to further safeguard against the spread of COVID-19.

BGC strongly encourages that the first two hours of operations be reserved as a dedicated time for senior citizens and critical and emergency responders. We are asking for customers’ help in honoring this practice and in moving any senior guests to the front of the check-out line throughout the day.

Social Distancing

Social distancing is an effective way to slow the spread and reduce the risk of exposure to the coronavirus. Social distancing is a set of interventions or measures taken to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance between people and reducing the number of times people come into close contact with each other.

BGC has installed decals on the ground at the checkout to help customers practice social distancing and know how much distance to put between themselves and other customers. As an added layer of protection for both our customers and employees, clear partitions have been installed at checkouts. The company has also established a designated social monitor at each store who is trained to ensure sanitation and social distancing procedures are properly followed.

Employee-Partner Resources

As a designated “Essential Employer” by both federal and state governments, BGC stores continue to remain open for business because our services have been deemed as critical to the infrastructure of our nation. All employees have been told they can wear gloves and masks to work if they choose. BGC has requested employees to increase wellness practices at work and at home to protect themselves, their families and customers in our stores. We have also enacted specific policies and guidelines for the workplace to minimize exposure and potential spread of the virus.

In recognition and gratitude, as the spirit of our employees shines through in this difficult time, BGC has already given a special half-week’s bonus pay, increased wages for those in our stores and logistics, implemented an extra employee discount, provided on-site meals, and developed a compensation plan for those who may be directly affected by COVID-19.

BGC has hired over 1,700 new employees to help serve the increased business in response to COVID-19. These new employees are not only helping the company serve the increased needs of its communities, but they are also allowing the team to take some much needed time off. The company is grateful to be able to employ people in our communities that may have been laid off.

BGC has also developed a tracking system and followed CDC guidelines for dealing with employees possibly exposed to the virus and those who contract the virus. The company has also followed an isolation procedure and protocol for sick or exposed employees in the workplace which includes the special compensation pay for those effected.

Here are a few highlights of BGC’s employee health protocols:
Wash hands often with soap and water, scrubbing for 20 seconds.
Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers frequently and thoroughly, rubbing until dry.
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and discard the tissue immediately after use. If you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze into the crook of your elbow, not hands.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Avoid close contact with others who are sick.
If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others, including pets.
Increase the frequency of sanitization practices at work and home, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces often.

Brookshire, believed it was his God-given calling to serve humanity through the grocery business. Today, we are also serving God by serving man during these times. Since 1928, courteous and compassionate service has remained at the core of who we are and what we stand for at Brookshire Grocery Company. We believe it is incredibly important for all of us to be kind to those around us. During these times of concern about COVID-19, we are asking you to join in our efforts to take care of our senior neighbors and others who are most vulnerable to this illness.

Effective immediately, we are strongly encouraging that our first hour of operations be reserved as a dedicated time for senior citizens. We are asking for your help in honoring this practice and in moving any senior guests to the front of the check-out line throughout the day. Additionally, we are excited to be able to offer a temporary 5% DAILY discount for senior citizens in all Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and FRESH by Brookshire’s through June 2, 2020. The discount is available to guests age 60 or older with valid ID. Additionally, we have waived fees for all guests on Curbside orders, where available, through June 2, 2020, as another way to help guests who are depending on us for this service.

We are so appreciative of you, our guests, for your incredible support, patience and understanding during these unprecedented times. We are also eternally grateful for our amazing employees, who have worked extremely long hours under challenging conditions to take care of our guests and communities. We can’t thank you enough for your observance of limits on certain high-demand items, taking only what you need and leaving some for your neighbors who come behind you. We greatly appreciate your understanding of our adjusted business hours, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., to allow us to clean, stock our shelves as product arrives, and allow our employees to get some much-needed rest.

We are honoring our advertised promotions and prices, but please know that our ads are prepared weeks in advance and not all featured products will be available due to the current high demand. Also, rainchecks will not be issued or honored at this time. We are encouraging our guests to avoid overbuying, as we will be limiting returns on purchases for safety and health purposes.

Please know that we will continue to work proactively to protect the safety and health of our employees, guests and communities. Thank you for shopping with us at Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market, and FRESH by Brookshire’s stores. We look forward to every opportunity to serve you!

Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC) and Our Family of Stores Stand Ready

Brookshire Grocery Company and Our Family of Stores Stand ReadyThe safety and health of our employees, guests and communities are top priorities for our Company. As the parent Company of Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and FRESH by Brookshire’s stores, BGC continues to closely monitor federal, state and local health authorities’ updates and advisements in preventing and dealing with the coronavirus. According to these authorities, the overall risk of coronavirus remains low in our market areas. However, we realize the potential future threat and are working proactively to be prepared.

What BGC is Doing

We are communicating with our leaders, employees and suppliers to keep them updated on current information and health advisements. We also have requested our employees to increase wellness practices at work and at home to protect them, their families and guests in our stores.  We have also enacted specific policies and guidelines for the workplace to minimize exposure and possible spread of the virus.

Ensuring Product Availability. While we are seeing increased demand and supplier limits on certain products like hand sanitizer, we are doing our best to remain well-stocked on high-demand items for our guests.

Taking Steps to Stay Safe and Healthy. We continue to take proactive and preventive measures, including sanitation practices beyond our normally stringent standards. We have reinforced training and increased communication and resources to help ensure our employees are well informed and implementing best practices. We have increased the frequency in which we sanitize surfaces such as shopping carts and baskets, keypads, counter tops, etc. As a standard practice, we have sanitizing wipes available near our shopping carts.

Reducing the Risk of Exposure. We have enacted a temporary business travel ban outside of the U.S. and for any nonessential business travel within the U.S. At our corporate offices, we are holding meetings with third-party suppliers and other off-site associates by conference call or other communication means. We have developed contingency plans for any employees who may come into contact with the coronavirus.

Reminding Everyone We’re All in This Together. While reports from the CDC and other health agencies indicate the risk from coronavirus will remain low for the general population, there are things all of us can do to reduce the potential spread of coronavirus and other viruses, including the following:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, scrubbing for 20 seconds.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers frequently and thoroughly, rubbing until dry.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and discard the tissue immediately after use. If you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze into the crook of your elbow, not your hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with others who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others, including pets.
  • Get a flu vaccine, available at BGC pharmacies, if you have not yet done so this season.
  • Increase the frequency of sanitization practices at work and home, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces often.

Our mission at BGC is to create and deliver exceptional experiences and value to our guests, which includes doing all we can as a Company to protect our employees and guests during this time of concern. We will continue to monitor the coronavirus situation and take any additional actions needed to ensure the safety and health of our employees, guests and communities. For further information about coronavirus, we recommend you visit cdc.gov/coronavirus. BGC updates will be made available on our Company News page at https://www.brookshires.com/company-news.

Super 1 Foods’ ‘Fill the Big Grocery Cart’ event provides over $6K in donations to St. Francis Diner

TYLER, Texas, Aug. 9, 2019 – The Super 1 Foods store located at 939 S. Lewis St. has donated over $6,000 in nonperishable food items and more than $1,000 to help St. Francis Diner provide meals to community members in need. The donations were made possible through the store’s “Fill the Big Grocery Cart” event Aug. 2– 3.

During the event, customers were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items with the goal to completely fill Super 1 Foods’ 13-foot tall motorized grocery cart. Beginning Aug. 3, customers who donated two or more non-perishable food items received a free Viator’s hot dog while supplies lasted.

The New Iberia Police Department, New Iberia Fire Department, Iberia Parish Sherriff’s Office, Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Freddie Decourt were among those who contributed non-perishable food items during the event.
